Rain!

It has rained here in Jacksonville for the entire week.

My wife -- see Carol's blog at keepingupwithcarol.blogspot.com -- is obsessed with the garden. Consequently, I have been been battling the ensuing floods for the past week. She has some rather interesting pictures on her blog.

The solution has been a 1/4 HP sump pump. I drilled out a bucket, connected a hose, and plugged the little bugger in. It has done a fantastic job (we estimate that it has pumped at least 50,000 gallons of water out of the yard -- an insane amount of water). Eventually, this device will be installed in a (yet-to-be-dug) catchment basin in a low spot in the yard with french drains running to it -- I am just in no mood to sink $10,000 into landscaping (back-filling and grading the property) in this economy.

Rain for a week. DW, with 2 year old in tow, is going to lose her mind if we don't see some lasting sunshine soon.

Thankfully, it is a 3-day weekend and we are forced to stay in the house to catch up on some much needed rest.

  1. Hey Philip, I cleared over in L.O. this morning and I got the lawn inside the fence mowed. Stopped for lunch and BAM it got pitch black with lightening and then the rains came. Uncle D ran out to put the tractor away, so that ended the mowing for the day. The only thing left was the drive and out by the road outside the fence so if it rains tomorrow I will not feel bad.

I tell you, it has been nice for us to just rest and crash this weekend. "D" needed it really bad, he needed to de-stress.

I told Uncle D that we need to plan a trip up so you CITY SLICKERS can come to the country. Maybe July 4th or Labor Day weekend. I will talk it over and see if we can set something up.
